Can mail be filed before I see it?

Rules run on the server as mail arrives, so your phone does not buzz for them.

Rules are in Settings → Rules. Each one is a condition and an action: if the sender contains billing@, file it into Invoices.

They run on the mail server at the moment mail is delivered, before any of your devices have seen it. That is why a rule that files something away does not make your phone buzz first.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Rules apply to mail arriving from now on. They do not reorganise what is already in your mailbox.
  • They run top to bottom, so order matters.
  • Forwarding keeps a copy here as well as sending one on.

If you already had a filtering script on this mailbox that was not created here, the rules screen will say so and will not replace it until you ask it to.
